It's almost as widely spoken as English, especially in the Western Hemisphere, and the literary traditions are good. Plus, there are some Spanish philosophers that are well worth reading as well. Plus it's sexier than French or German.
Oh, and if you master reading/writing/speaking Spanish, you can learn Portuguese in about 6-12 months, Italian in about a year or two, and even some French. It's the gateway Romance language. Oh, and to read Borges, Gabo, Vargas Llosa, Fuentes, Allende, Gorodischer, Zafón, Cercas, Bolaño, Fuguet, Soldán, Padilla, Volpi, etc. in their native language...divine.
