That said, German could be fun. I also spent some time in South Africa, and learned some Afrikans, which I'm told is closely related to German.
Though as I understand there is also a decent number of South-Africans with actually German roots, and a couple of them might still speak it. But Afrikaans is largely mutually intelligible with Dutch, and not really with German.
