As in, Hero or Hero's Closest Friend was a villain the whole time?
Or as in the Hero is eventually corrupted and switches sides?
Or the Hero stays the same and the world changes their perception to where they see him as the villain?
All of them can be awesome, if done right. It's a hard thing to do. It's got be completelylogical consistent, because some characters aren't logical at all. But it's also got to be unexpected, which is hard to pull off.
