They are really excellent books. I really loved how Nathaniel and Kitty mature through the books. Bartimaeus is a real blast, one of the best characters I have ever read.
I would say they are on par with the best Harry Potter books and with better marketing, they might have been able to compete, though I don't know if anything could have ever competed with the HP marketing juggernaut.
