Books on shelves function as CO2 depositories.


First of all, the destruction of trees and all that is involved in that - from the getting to them, to the cutting them down, to delivering the cut down trees, to then the processing of them into paper is all extremely energy intensive. Then there is the delivery of the paper and the energy required to create the books. Not to mention all the energy required to go into the creation of the ink for the paper. Then the creation of the boxes into which books are packed into before being shipped. Then the shipping itself. Then the recycling of the boxes and the energy involved in shipping the recycled boxes.

Sorry, the creation and delivery of books is far more energy intensive than the creation and delivery of eBooks from a server to a computer.


You cannot count the actual removal of trees to taht list, as the CO2 remains in the pulp. Once made, however, the book remains neutral, whereas an e-book reader always requires electricity.
