I don't think carbon in the soil (where most of that rotting carbon goes to) is part of the CO2 problem. It's in the air that matters, and that's where a lot goes in the harvesting, production and shipping steps. Books on the shelf are not CO2 depositories, they contain carbon that mostly would not otherwise have even entered the atmosphere.
