It's an entertaining read, certainly, but I have to say that it is too melodramatic to truly be called 'good'.
Mf.
Yes and no. I stand by the term "delicious". It does not have the characters of the musketeer-books. But after the cumbersome beginning, which I always hate, it feels very satisfying. Apart from the very end (I am always surprised he does not go with Mercedes). Melodramatic, yes. Sometimes too much. But in the main, if it is melodrama it is good melodrama. But I find I always forget that when I look back on it after having read it.
All I remember are things like Vampa reading heavy stuff, the vulgarity of Danglars, Danglars' lesbian daughter, Faria, and the texture of Monte-Cristo himself.
And you must admit. It is quite satisfying to feel confident that the bad will come to worse and the good to better sometimes.

I'm coming to the conclusion it's just fluff masquerading as literature.

I think the only thing I've read in its entirety in French was L'Histoire d'O.

But how would I know if it was the same story? Someone might have changed it while I wasn't reading!
