Lets talk Otherland and immortality *SPOILERS* Dark Knight Send a noteboard - 12/01/2010 08:33:54 PM
I think Tad William's Otherland series is the best Sci-Fi books I have read. But, for me, the ending left something to be desired. More specifically, the whole focal point of the series (old rich geezers wanting immortality) just didn't sit right with me.

Is it just me, or does immortality mean to never die? What was finally revealed is not immortality. For those of you who need a refresher, the old geezers would create a virtual reality clone in Otherland. Then, a scan would be made of their brain and they would commit suicide at the same time to come online. Thus, their virtual reality clone would have all of their personality and memories right up to the point of their RL death. Incidentially, this is exactly what happens to boy hero Orlando.

Excuse me, but that is not immortality. YOU STILL DIE! Ok so you have a virtual clone who is just like you. BUT ITS NOT YOU! Whatever happens to you when you die still happens. You didn't avoid it. You will go on to god knows what and it doesn't even matter if you created a clone.

Am I alone on this?
