So I just finished "Soldiers Live" (and the Black Company series over all)

I loved it. I thought that the departure from the traditional quest/hero fantasy plot was a breath of fresh air. Added to that is the fact that the protagonists are absolutely not good people. They are mercenaries. They do their jobs, they do them well, and they don't take crap from anyone.
Soldiers Live was particularly excellent, I thought. Getting a lot of Mogaba and having Croaker as Annalist again made it stand out from the previous three (and don't get me wrong, I LOVED Bleak Seasons through Water Sleeps). Some new, really interesting things came up from the Khatovar world, and I found the resolution very satisfying. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes a very human fantasy series with believable, flawed characters and great plotlines.

Well I read before most of the second series was written so it didn't seem like a distraction
