Lions of Al'Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay--beautiful, lyrical, alterna-history; no apparent 'magic' system. Marvelous.


To be quite technical, Lions isn't completely standalone...The Sarantine Mosaic books take place within that world, though during a different time period. As does "The Last Light Of The Sun" I believe.


Well, it's stand-alone because the story is over. Even if it's the same 'world' in the Sarantine Mosaic (which I did read) and Last Light (which I didn't), the story is over. Neither of these other books can be sequels in the proper sense. By your reckoning, Tigana wouldn't be stand-alone either, because it makes oblique references to the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy's world ;) Your reckoning works better for a book like Ysabel. :)


The Princess Bride by William Goldman--it's inconceivable not to love it. Also, it isn't a book about animals or with an animal in the title.


Abridged or unbridged? Because I'm told the unabridged version can get really boring at times.

I recommend reading the 'deluxe' version (with bonus material), which includes the marvelous 'abridged sequel', Buttercup's Baby and the story of how Goldman had to go to Maine to consult with Stephen King about how to write it.
