I have a fundamental problem with the idea of reading works that are meant to be performance art. It's like reading the screenplay to a movie...it's far better to watch a performance. I can see how, even fifty years ago, this was not feasible for study purposes, but ever since VHS came out that has changed. Plays should be watched.


Reading them makes it easier to focus on the text, though. And to discuss different possibilities for staging. The script is the potential, while the film or play is one instance. Both are valid, I think.
