I admit I've only seen two episodes of the series...

Both of them somewhere late in season one. I'm not sure how anyone can rate the series highly, based on what I've seen, yet some people whose taste I have a certain amount of trust in, do maintain that it's good... it's weird. Maybe the huge differences from the book do bother me more than they should. In any case, for your actual question, Wizard's First Rule is not so bad, and is really self-contained enough to read as a stand-alone. You could always try and convince them the series only ever consisted of one book.

This is my take too. Plus my sister who didn't read them thinks the series is rather original for TV

The books do have a large following and are all bestsellers.
