A forced march through all six volumes of his unabridged Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is taking its toll on me, though. I look with longing on other books, knowing that I'm only halfway through even though I've read about 2000 pages. However, I seek to emulate Marcus Aurelius, not Honorius, and so I will persevere.
I think that this weekend I'll take a break and re-read Zhivago. I would have read it in Aruba last week but I realized that the paperback version that I had (which would have been acceptable to take on the beach and subject to the elements) was never returned by my ex-girlfriend several years ago and so I brushed up on my German instead.

Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
