It's an excellent trilogy (even though the first is weirdly enough the dullest one, as you point out). I loved it. It's underrated in both young adult/children's fiction as well as fantasy; when people new to the genre want a soft fantasy that doesn't require too much time or effort, but is still imaginative and touching without being twee, it's the first I suggest.
