Do you ever do something just because you'd read it in a book?

A few days ago Ben mocked me when I confessed to having taken a shine to gin&tonics in the bath tub. Actually, his words were "you would", but the tone does not translate into writing.
Anyway. The only reason why I even contemplated it in the first place was because of the crazy captain and his jynnan tonnyx in The Restaurant at the end of the Universe. And the extended parenthetical remark regarding the ubiquity of that particular name (in its various spelling) for drinks in the Galaxy.
So (to make it possible for Ben to mock you, too -- it makes him happy): have you attempted to miss the ground (or, indeed, succeeded)? Or done something else simply because you read it in a book and thought it sounded like a good idea (or not)?
This is the place to relate your wacky anecdotes.

Difficult here in Edinburgh, what with the way it doesn't keep to one direction. *NM*
