I really love it - It's like Abercrombie is saying FU and giving the finger to epic fantasy. Brilliant.

That that is just as contrived as all the good guys winning? He went through an awful lot of trouble just to see everyone get screwed over.


I do think it's somewhat contrived (for all the subversion, Abercrombie basically embraces many of the fantasy tropes he's supposedly subverting). But I also think that what he does has a more 'realistic' feel to it and the novelty of itall really stnads apart.

Realism can be overhyped though. ;) I think a good balance is a good idea. I mean, books like Martin's are depressing, where the guys you like keep getting screwed.
But that's why bittersweet is my favorite. To each his own, no? :)
