The animorphs were great. I loved them as a kid, and then went back and re-read them all in college. 
Overall I enjoyed them very much, but I have to disagree with you on the ending. The final confrontation was great, but the "epilogue" stuff was crap. It was a huge cliffhanger, but worse, it more or less invalidated everything the animorphs had done up to that point. "Great job guys! Oh, by the way though, there's another random super powerful race that we haven't mentioned at all up to now, and they want to kill you too."
/sigh.

They DIED. Can't be less of a cliffhanger than that.
Oh, I guess it's possible they survived somehow but I prefer my version.
