But never managed to get into it (I have a bit of a problem with instant gratification). Is the Malazan series really that great? I always hear people raving about it, but I haven't gotten as into it. Since WoT and mayyybe asoif, I haven't been able to get into much fantasy lately (though gene wolf is often a treat :P).

I, personally, think that WoT is fluff, and hasn't really been good for a good many years now, and aSoIaF is just so dull I never read on after book 1. Wolfe on the other hand is an excellent writer with many good stories.

I'm thinking of picking up Gardens of the Moon again when I get back from college, so, is it worth my time? Is Malazan the kind of series that will have me truly addicted? Or is it something that requires real effort to get into?

It is worth your time, if you have anything remotely reminding of good taste (as in, equal to mine, which is the only standard which by such can be judged), however, dwindling quality and horrid pointless violence over the last few books has made it merely good, and not the best thing since lord of light. You sort of missed the Erikson hype of ... ehrm... 2002-3 something? which makes it more optional to read it. If you prefer stories in another vein, go for those instead. No need to punish yourself with erikson if you cannot stand it. I have a little project going: reading all nobel prize winners. Maybe you want to join that instead? :D
