Oh ya! KOuellette Send a noteboard - 30/03/2010 09:57:50 AM
Alright, I'm about half way through Dust of Dreams, and it struck me that I haven't been able to figure out the overall story of the Malazan series. Maybe it's just me, and I'm thinking there's something more complex going on than there really is, but could someone help me out on this? Is it just the story of Laseen's reign as Empress?

Laseen is assassinated in RotCG (which is contemporaneous with Reaper's Gale) by Vorcan's daughter in RotCG, with the Jhistal preist Mallick Rel assuming her place as Emperor. There is a (minor) reference to this in DoD by I believe Quick Ben.

By the end of DoD, the primary plot of the series (so far as I can tell) is that the Forkrul Assail control the physical heart of the Crippled God and are trying to bring it back to life and use it/him as the ultimate expression of the Forkrul's goal of "universal peace". However, there are a number of other events that continue to hinder this: primarily the return of the K'Chain Nah'ruk right in the middle of the path of the Bonehunters/Burned Tears/Grey Helms of Perish on their way from Letheras to Kolanse (where the heart is, on the other side of the continent).

I forgot Laseen was assassinated. I didn't notice that Mallick Rel stepped up as Emporor, though.
