they DID synthesize the dna, they simply used an already-living vessel.
I mean, if they can put together Chain A, Chain D, Chain Pi etc. and actual produce an ORGANISM that is pretty impressive, but somehow that seems unlikely. And yes, it would still be impressive if they just grew an existing creatures DNA in a petri dish without having to use an existing physical specimen as seed, but there's a world of difference between the two. It's the difference between translating Hamlet into Mandarin vs. Shakespeare writing the play. And in neither case could anyone claim to have "created language. "
