more places are looking for platform-independent applications. if more and more useful software is written so that you don't need a specific flavor of PC and OS combination, then it will no longer be necessary for end users to care which one their system is running. even among web developers it's becoming taboo to continue programming web based applications that require Internet explorer to work correctly. if you can create and save a microsoft compatible document without having to spend $300 for the software... well, you get the idea :)
