Individual NATO members can be attacked without it incurring a full NATO response (the UK did have some NATO intelligence assistance from France and the USA, but did not call for NATO military assistance in the Falklands War), whilst individual NATO members can undertake offensive action disapproved of by other NATO members without being kicked out by the organisation (France and Britain in Suez, Britain and the US in Iraq, etc). Whilst technically NATO is meant to respond to any threat to any individual member, in spirit NATO is oriented against Russia and potential large-scale threats to all of Europe (such as Iran).

This is the "One country can't get NATO into WW3 because they're acting like dicks," clause.

If Turkey was kicked out of NATO or chose to leave of its own violtion, that would also see 5,000+ American and European military personnel have to pull out of Incirlik. It would also, certainly to the relief of the Israelis, mean that ninety nuclear missiles based in Turkey would have to be withdrawn.
