He was told he didn't have to speak and he spoke. It isn't like they grilled him for days he was there for three hours and pretty much admitted that he had shot and killed someone. His rights were not violated but letting him walk would have violated the rights of victim and his family.
The Miranda Rights have grown out of control and they need to be trimmed back to some sort of reason. Getting people to admit to crimes they committed is not a bad thing.

My problem is with scaling them back in such a way that those who are smart or better-informed get a huge advantage. If merely saying "I'm using my Miranda rights" immediately ends the interrogation, as Kennedy suggests, then they should just start the interrogation with "do you exercise your Miranda rights, yes or no?" so that everyone is on the same footing.
