FIle cleaning won't help, no Floffe Send a noteboard - 07/06/2010 09:55:44 PM
So what makes a laptop get hotter and noisier over the years? Is it just mileage (20 months in this case) or all the crap that's on it? In other words, can some "file cleaning" help? How exactly?
Or is this automatically a sign that the notebook has a problem with its fan? It did not shut down because of heat yet, mind you. In the current (weather-caused) heat wave it did almost burn my knees, though. When I closed a rather demanding program like Skype it calmed down a litte.

Now, a comp-illiterate friend recommended cooling pads, see German link below. Are those any good, helpful or necessary? They're not cheap, at least.

Any ideas? :)

My guess is that the heatsink(s) inside have gathered enough dust to lessen their effect so that the fan has to blow more air across them for the same cooling effect. You should be able to open it up and clean it, google for "service manual <laptop model>" for instructions. Most just require a regular X screwdriver, but some brands are more annoying.

As for cooling pads, I have no idea how well those work, but if you do get one you lose some of the mobility that's the point of a laptop...
