It sounds like you're interested in jurisprudence (philosophy of law). Try one (or both) of these two books, which are very readable. If you have access to a university library, they're likely to be there. They each have several older editions (especially Bix) so if you have to buy but are short of money, look for one of those rather than getting the latest one.
