If someone else lost them, then I don't know what was wrong with your parents.
If YOU lost them, then your parents probably didn't want to buy another set because they expected you'd lose those, too. My parents were sort of like that, and it taught me to take care of things if I wanted to keep them.
Case in point: of the dozens of board games that I have, the only piece I am missing is one German fighter plane from the original 1982 version of Axis & Allies, and I suspect my brother is responsible for that loss. There are no water marks, sticky spots or stains on any of the boards.
So, at least in my case, I got the lesson.
