I think the guy needed a friend to calm him down and talk sense into him. It's a shame Gazza didn't manage to do that before it was too late.

... Gazza might have done this in private. The image of a (former) celebtrity like him calling a guy who shot two people "a good friend" and "all right" is kind of disturbing to the public.
OTOH maybe Gazza wanted to keep it low, but the yellow press just wouldn't let him.
I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when
there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.
