So yesterday I had a phone interview with the head of the science department at Kings Academy in Jordan. I had put in an application to work there but I hadn't expected anything to come of it. I would be lying if I didn't say living and working in Jordan as an American didn't scare me some. Which I am sure came through in my phone interview. I thought though I would see if there was anyone here who had any connection to that school, graduated from it worked there or any Americans who had lived or worked in Jordan. Doing as much research as I can, and as expected it is somewhat contradictory.
My husband is from Jordan, it's not as ass backwards as everyone things.
Scariest thing you'll find is the driving. The only rule is there are no rules.
Otherwise, it would be like living in America. People (generally) speak enlgish. There are fast food restaurants, tv, air conditioning, cable, etc...It's pretty normal.
It's probably the most modern middle east nation, probably even ahead of the UAE in all honesty.
Tons of people speak English in Amman and Aqaba and culture is fairly westernized. Lots of foreign goods and people are generally well-off.
Driving... well it's not too bad IMO. Amman is a notoriously hilly city which can make things difficult, but the flow of traffic is not as chaotic as in other big cities. Plus, the city is organized into circles/rings of sorts, so there is at least some order.
Living there as an American is not terribly difficult. Be sure to take a dip in the Dead Sea
