I think the guy needed a friend to calm him down and talk sense into him. It's a shame Gazza didn't manage to do that before it was too late.
The guys dead, a policeman didn't have to do it, and we don't have to waste money on a trial and jail sentence. Win all round I say.
My sympathy is with the poor sods he shot and/or killed, not him. Wish he'd done himself sooner, so either no-one got hurt beyond him, or less police time and money was wasted once he had hurt/killed people.
And, as you point out, less police time would have been wasted.
Although I don't like it when people die unnecessarily, even criminals, I take your point about the expense of a trial. It's good to have justice, but that's an abstract notion and it's hard to know how much we should be prepared to pay for it, especially in times like these. Imagine the media circus surrounding the trial. And he would probably have appealed the conviction on the grounds that the jury had all read the news – more expense.
