But I can see that logic - I think that ties in with love, or lack thereof, and not just fear of a unpredictable environment. People look for a way to feel close to someone, and sex frequently becomes that tie. Also, they are bored.

It seems to be how the things you mentioned would manifest in human society. yes, it is a sensible evolutionary trait to have - breed enough to keep the species alive but not enough to overbreed what a region can support.
