It's a shame forum posts don't have "Sent from my iPhone" at the bottom like e-mails do. Tim Send a noteboard - 25/07/2010 12:00:12 AM
I guess now I have to be open minded about alright. Ugh. Can't you defend words that look pretty for a change? :disapprove:

There are plenty of ugly words in the dictionary that are completely uncontentious. Tell you what, why don't you try and tip the balance the other way by making up some aesthetic neologisms?

I assume "alot" is still okay to frown upon. And as for the article, yeah, I don't have much to say. I think it's largely an attempt to pigeonhole red states.

If you dislike "alot", you may find this blog post interesting (see link below).

EDIT: Actually I'm going to come out and say that I think the article's main premise is just woefully incorrect. Most Americans who are against homosexual marriage because of religion. I think the red/blue distinction probably affects this, but I think the author has confused the fake arguments that religious activists throw out against gay marriage for the actual motivations behind opposing it.

I think it's all interwoven, to be honest. I suspect there are plenty of people who don't give a damn about religion, except when it's possible to use it as a justification for imposing their viewpoint on others, at which point it becomes convenient to thump the family Bible. And a lot of religious people who might be more liberal were it not for their religion. It's all part of the same cultural package.
