Probably the biggest factor is price. If you want a device to read books the price difference between ipad and Kindle or other ebook readers is significant.

Another issue would be size and or weight. Imagine laying back on a recliner or in bed and holding up your ipad. Your arms are going to be getting pretty tired. If you primarily read at a desk this shouldn't be any kind of problem, but if you are someone who likes to fall to sleep reading a good book the lighter the weight the better.

LCD screens are not that good outdoors. If you are not one to take a book to the beach or park this once again is no problem.

Ebook readers can generally go weeks on one battery charge.

All good things come to those who wait.
