An observation Camilla Send a noteboard - 01/08/2010 09:49:41 PM
I have a thing for glasses. Not the stuff you see through (well, I mean...) but the ones you drink from. In fact, I have long suspected that my thing for red wine is really founded in my love of the glass and colour. I have been forced to this conclusion by cocktail glasses.

You see, I heartily dislike most drinks served in a cocktail glass. I wish I didn't, because I love drinking from them, but they usually taste ... disappointing(ly?) (I cannot help feel that if there it to be an adverb, it should be followed by an explanation (ie disappointingly banal or some such) -- but perhaps I should stop with the parantheses now).

Anyway. Lovely, lovely glasses. And they might have made a bona fide alcoholic of me if I had not realised I could drink water with lemon and ice from them. Rather than martinis (so much work for SUCH a sad taste, but I digress).

Anyhow. My observation is the following: when someone at some point designed (presumably) this type of glasses, they must have had the ulterior motive of preventing alcohol poisoning (probably quite sensible considering British people in the 20s appear (from literature, which is the only true source of knowledge) to have started drinking martinis shortly after breakfast). It is positively impossible to keep the main portion of the contents of the glass in the glass if one has anything like a wobbly balance. I can testify to this, having just spilt water with lemon all over my sofa while trying to sit down. While completely sober.
