Do you want the absolute best for them, even if it means taking yourself out of their life? Then it's love. If you just really enjoy spending time with them, but wouldn't sacrifice your happiness for theirs, it's less likely to be love. But it still might be!

Be open and honest about it. There's a woman I am friends with, but I think could be a stable, good relationship for both of us... but she's not into me that way. How did I find that out? By telling her "Hey there, you don't put up with my bullshit but you still enjoy my presence, and I have a lot of fun when I'm with you... Do you want to try going from friends to dating?" (That's almost a direct quote, mind you...) She then punched my arm, hugged me, and said she didn't like me quite like that, but that if I ever tried to stop being her friend she'd hunt me down and kill me. (I believe her!

Honey, no. Flirting is flirting is flirting. It depends on who you are flirting with, not their gender. The woman I mentioned above is more of a "guy" than most of the men I know... flirting with her requires a bit more bluntness and allows some crassness. I know a cute, scrawny little twink boy who I flirt with regularly... I don't think anything could come of it, but he's cute and it's fun to make him blush. There I dial back the directness, and definitely tone down the crass talk.
You have to judge your flirt based on the target of said flirtation, not on their genitalia. Even if that is your end goal.

Yep... if you're open and honest about it, and both are willing to be mature about dealing with it. Honesty and maturity are what will keep your friendship together.
