You probably have some program running to take care of your mouse and keyboard, where the default action for clicking the mouse wheel is not 3rd button, but rather autoscroll or universal scroll or something. It is most impractical when using a standard webbrowser, which has as a default that clicking the middle button will result in opening the link in a new window.
Except in sane systems the middle button is #2 and the right one is button #3. But yeah, that scroll thing is annoying.
