As you note, no idea how consistent and comprehensive they are about it, but this is why we need to distinguish marriage as a legal institution from marriage as a Christian sacrament: However one feels about the Churchs views of an issue, they can't just disregard those views and still claim to be the Church. Which is one of many reasons we have the First Amendment: So that religious institutions aren't forced to condone practices they officially condemn, and so THAT right doesn't preclude the right of others to engage in those practices regardless of what the Church or anyone thinks.
