Remember that NC Baptist church kicking out non-Bush supporters in '04? Joel Send a noteboard - 07/09/2010 11:46:18 AM
Your statement is ridiculous. Try learning something about the Christian (Roman Catholic) tradition and worldview before arguing against some part of it. Ex-communication has existed since the beginning of the Church and is still a valid exercise of action by Church leadership where appropriate - whether you think it is stupid or not.

And, just so you know, most major Protestant churches also reserve the right to shun or kick out of their congregations anyone they find not upholding the standards of the faith (according to them).

And, btw, what you think is dumb is, I dare say, found in every religion to some extent. That is every religion has a means of dealing with heresy or rebelliousness against God's appointed authority.

Seems like much the same thing. And, really, how else could it be? Obviously it's subject to abuse, like anything entrusted to human intermediaries, but if a someone raised in a given religious system went around murdering children, mass producing WMDs and throwing rocks at puppies I can't think of many major religions who wouldn't disavow them. Salvation is properly a matter between the individual and God (for one thing, which of us knows the future; I bet most folks St. Augustine knew in his youth assumed he was on the bullet train to Hell) but if someone's making a mockery of a religions faith while claiming to be a member I don't think it's unreasonable for religious leaders to say, "You sure as hell AREN'T!" Aren't a lot of moderate (read: sane) Muslim clerics doing just that with Islamic terrorists? Did Pope John Paul II endorse the IRA?
