I'm pregnant with my third child and have two cats. My OB doctor just said wear gloves when I garden and I make my 11 year old change the litter or wear gloves when I do that. I'm also supposed to wash my hands after cuddling with a kitty...I think I remember to do that most of the time. And my OB doctors are really, really strict compared to some others I've heard of.
My pediatrician strongly recommends keeping newborns and kitties supervised when they are together, but not to the extent of getting rid of the cats or anything.
I'm really shocked that people would put their cats down for these reasons...I'd keep my cats anyway but I also read that having pets helps keep kids from developing allergies. Don't know how true this is, but it makes sense to me.
