important enough to remember to pay. Apparently the man wasn't too poor to pay as he offered whatever it took to get the firefighters out.

...had he been to poor, they would have just stood and did nothing either, right? And that can't be right.

Save the house, get legal about costs, fees etc. later. This is ridiculous and would never fly over here.

I get the feeling that this is what happened with the man - he IS poor, decided against "insurance" just like many other people here who can't afford health insurance and hope nothing happens. I agree that problem is that there needs to be a "better way." I can understand why the firefighters didn't charge in heroically, but it's not right in the big picture.
