I've thought it was because it objectifies women. BlackAdder Send a noteboard - 08/10/2010 05:39:54 PM
So I saw an ad for a show called Sister Wives about a family in Utah, 1 man 1 legal wife, and 2 spiritual wives. Between the 4 of them they have 13 kids. 2 of the wives work, one chooses to stay home and cook and stuff, but everyone chips in. they make good money and support their whole brood. They aren't like the Duggars where the older kids have to raise the younger ones cuz there are plenty of responsible loving parents to go around. And the dad is currently interested in a single mother who wants to be a part of the family with her 3 kids. And the other wives are debating letter her be a part of their family. Now the attorney general of Utah is trying to prosecute them or threatening to anyways. I dont see what the problem is here. If a man is married legally to one woman and she has no problem with him being with other women and even having kids with her and they all move into one house together, how is it the government business what they do. They have a problem with him calling all of them his wives but if he said she is my mistress or "baby mama" would that be ok? its kind of like the whole gay marriage debate, it makes no sense.

And before you say, "well BlackAdder, a woman could have multiple husbands," let me just add that that is much less common due to culture and stereotypes of the female role vs. male role.

Anyway, that was my thinking for why it is considered so taboo (along with the moralist arguments). I'm not sure I agree or disagree with it.
