Oh, hmm. I assume it involves some integration. Or just calculating the volume of the rock removed, which would be approx 198 cubic metres. Hmm, no, I think you probably have to integrate the potential energy function from 0 to 700 m for that. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do this anymore (if I ever really did)

and one for pol/economic sci: What is a life worth? We're not willing to spend more than 100,000 per possibility of saved lives to build enough hospitals to keep people from dying. However, digging up miners cost a whole lot (I don't know how much), is it worth it due to political capital?

Obviously, and think about how much money the global media made off of it. It's definitely a positive externality.
