Agreed. The Dutch one doesn't really have anything close to it in English, but French è and ê are similar, if you know French. In the northern pronunciations, a sort of y (consonant y, I mean, not vowel) is added to the end of that. And yes, that consonant part would then indeed be similar to that in German "ei". But the vowel part is so different that I can't understand how Tom doesn't hear the difference.
