That most of what we know is based on what other people tell us. We have neither the time nor the inclination to dedicate years studying the issue ourselves and coming to an informed opinion. So, really, if you think about it, human beings are actually quite trusting.

I have the inclination, at least with things on which I bother commenting but, no, I don't have the time. That's why there are no true polymaths anymore, and why we need to be archiving all our modern Great Libraries. Still, there's a difference between concluding something is PROBABLY true and concluding it's certain. For all I know, I'm some sentient jellyfish on a planet orbiting Rigel, hallucinating this whole conversation. But I'm betting against that. ;)
