Does running hot showers really use up a lot of heat?

Beats me. But if your showers are frequent, long and hot, you might look into getting a water heater blanket.

I would love to winterize, only this apartment is a rental, so the landlord doesn't care too much if our heating bill is high. Also it's hard if the apartment is finished.

Inspect the return-air filter and the filter on the furnace, either one of which may or may not be a part the heating system you have. Replacing dirty ones can make a big difference.

Water heater blanket - is that just a blanket that goes over the water heater?

I'll be sure to ask my landlord about the filters.
