on a Mac ... you can toggle between languages (I have Czech and US and Russian up there, and the international tab in System Preferences can open up another bazillion keyboard options ...)

also, for more basic accents usually alt+x will work. I e alt+e gives a é á í, alt + ` gives à è ì accent, alt + u gives double dots, ï ü, alt + i gives the carrot thing î, â ... further more, alt plus o gives norse ø, alt plus a gives norse å, ... most keyboards have some options for adding accents and stuff, just experiment.
