As I understand it, a pet peeve is an insignifcant thing (i.e. not a danger to anyone) that annoys a person.
For instance, at work, people are always leaving the chairs in the breakroom in the middle of the walkways, instead of pushing them back in toward the tables. This annoys me greatly. I consider it a pet peeve of mine.
