Right now VISA and MC can pretty much dictate the terms and if you don't like it you can try running a store that won't accept credit cards. Maybe they can stop offer all those reward systems that only favor the wealthy and businerss travelers. The rest of us are paying for those free miles with higher fees being passed onto to us from the retailer.
