It was a misanthropic joke that caught on because the world is so misanthropic these days, and Christmas seems to bring out the worst in some folks who need us all to know they're miserable bastards. If they wanna "celebrate" that, fine, but leave me out of it; I won't insist on their happiness if they don't insist on my misery.
Sounds like your misery is doing just fine without help.
Why should someone's joke mess with your enjoyment of your holiday? Go make some cookies or something and stop looking for reasons to be mad about this- Tom's post is all I've seen that's remotely a-christmas.
