# The United States Interstate Highway System was not designed with airplane landings in mind. A common urban legend states that one out of every five (or ten) miles of highway must be straight and flat to allow emergency (or military) airplane landings, but this is not the case.[194][195]


Looking at the issue above from a different perspective, I was under the impression that when building the highway system, engineers determined they needed to add curves every "x" miles (3-5 or something close) to add a distraction for drivers to pay attention to, thus avoiding sleepiness on the road. If they made them as straight as possible for as long as possible, they were worried too many people would nod-off and crash.
I would slave, to pave the way, to sink your ship of fools.
