It's not just a Catholic thing; there's a strong and justified sense charity isn't compulsory. Joel Send a noteboard - 05/02/2011 12:56:24 AM
We're a nation of greedy bitches who don't like to help each other.
Sidenote: Its funny how so many of the Catholics that I know are republicans. This is funny because they're always talking of "Help thy neighbor" yet with bills such as this, they call bullshit. Further, many of them have issues with most of the forms of welfare. Just an observation on my part. No, I'm not saying they're all like this, nor that all Catholics are republican nor that all republicans are Catholic or anything else.

If someone voluntarily chooses to help another in need, at their own expense, that's laudable; if a third party forcibly takes the first persons money to help the second that's less so. I actually respect that view, but it's harmful to the nation of which we're all part to deny lifes essentials to those who can't pay for them. It reduces our productivity, our readiness in time of war, our innovation, everything. A lot of folks opposed to public healthcare get offended when I say they act like anyone unprofitable should have the decency to die, but restricting healthcare to those who can pay for it themselves does exactly that, whether or not anyone is able to face that simple fact.
